With all our Rock N Roll inspiration for Black and White week, a flashing neon sign seemed like the perfect home DIY project to accompany our rocker chick OOTDs. And it’s surprisingly easy to make!
To get started you need a canvas, we used THIS 12×24 canvas, paint (obviously we went for black), some El Wire we got the 16 ft in white, and some needle and thread.
Start by poking a hole in the canvas where you want your lettering to start (you may have to use a pen and/or knife to make the hole big enough for the el wire)
Then thread the entire el wire through that hole.
Then start positioning your wire to form the letters for whatever word or phrase you’re writing. You have to tape the letters down as you go to hold them in place until you start sewing the letters to the canvas.
You’ll end up with something like this! But trust us, it will turn out ok! As you can see in the picture above we poked more holes in the canvas where we wanted the letters separated. So between the K of “rock” and the N and between the N and the R of “roll”. And then one last hole at the end of the word.
Then starting at the beginning you’re going to thread your needle and thread at any contact points where the el wire comes together.
You’ll continue your way across all the letters sewing the el wire to the canvas anywhere that isn’t laying flat.
The back will end up looking something like this. For the battery pack, just super glue or hot glue it to the inside of your canvas with the button facing out.
Now light that baby up and rock n roll all night!!
